Hells Bells

Hells Bells

Closing my eyes I squeeze the iron handle hard enough to make indentations. I am ready to move the world.

Breathe in, explode out. I launch the kettlebell to my shoulder, pause and push it overhead.

In that instant all that exists is moving the weight. Zen or not, it is my meditation and it keeps me coming back day after day, year after year.

Wintery Mix - Workout Regimen

Wintery Mix - Workout Regimen

We were flying through the field and up the hill. The soft ground added a subtle resistance. Not enough to slow us down, just enough to notice.

He let me win. I thought he was being nice. He then bit my hand to try and get me to chase him. I looked down at my dog Duke and noticed he was covered in mud. I was too.

Check out my latest workout to get you through the rest of the winter.

New Year, New You - How to Make the Most of Your Fitness in 2016

New Year, New You - How to Make the Most of Your Fitness in 2016

The pecan pie was rich, syrupy and delicious. The apple pie was sweet and refreshing. The ice cream was, well… it’s ice cream and it was awesome. All the wine and beer, they were fun.

I subconsciously think I over indulge during the holidays to give me a hole to climb out of in the new year. I like this strategy.

I start the year off with a struggle and a small goal. I then let it build and change as the year moves along.

For 2016 I am pulling out all of the stops. While sitting in an apple pie induced carb coma I had visions of how I am going to make 2016 my best fitness year yet.

Reflection - What I Learned From Training Outdoors for An Entire Year

Reflection - What I Learned From Training Outdoors for An Entire Year

The ground was mushy and muddy and so were my sneakers. The pull-up bar was covered with a thin sheet of frost. I secured my grip, inhaled the sub 32 degree morning air and a big smile came across my face.

I have been there before. My memories of last winters bitter cold seemed closer than they should. I lived in the cold last winter. I trained every session outside in it. I persisted and the winter did not.

Check out this post on what I learned from training outdoors in 2015.

Gear - Equipment for Training Outdoors

Gear - Equipment for Training Outdoors

When I started Outdoor Fitness Project I decided not to use any equipment for the first month. After that, I looked for gaps in my training that could be filled with the use of simple gear. Every few months, I try new pieces of gear and note if it improves my training enough to warrant a recommendation. Basically, would I purchase the gear again?

In this post I highlight the gear I find most useful for training outdoors.

The Mighty Push-up

The Mighty Push-up

Ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku… my fists were buried into the hard wood floor. They were starting to burn, but I was more worried about my triceps giving out first. We were at rep 86 of 100 push-ups. This was part of the warm up for my JuJitsu class.
Throughout the years, push-ups have remained a staple in my training. Whether it be in gym class, dojo, or working out.

Check out my post on taking push-ups to the next level.

Getting Started

Getting Started

Walking up to the building was intimidating. It was grey and dull with serious looking people. Inside heavy metal blared from the sound system. The only thing you could hear over the music was the clanking of weights... serious weights.

It was 1991, I was 14 and just joined Golds Gym in Lynbrook, NY. It was the beginning of my fitness education.
